A flat tyre outside a station, on the school run or halfway to the airport is not the time to find out what is in your boot. The spare wheel versus sealant decision affects how safely and how far you can travel after a puncture. One may get you moving quickly; the other may be the better option for protecting the tyre and keeping your day on track.
For most drivers, a spare wheel offers the more dependable short-term answer. Tyre sealant is useful in the right situation, but it is not a fix for every flat tyre and should never be treated as one.
Spare wheel versus sealant: the practical difference
A spare wheel replaces the damaged wheel and tyre. Once fitted correctly and inflated to the proper pressure, it allows you to drive away without relying on the punctured tyre to hold air. A full-size spare is closest to a normal replacement tyre, while a narrow space-saver spare is designed only to get you to a tyre professional.
Sealant works differently. It is a liquid injected through the tyre valve, usually with a small compressor. As the wheel turns, the sealant coats the inside of the tyre and may seal a small hole in the tread area. It is intended as a temporary measure, not a permanent repair.

After using sealant, keep your speed low and drive only as far as necessary. Sealant has limits that drivers often overlook. It may not work in cold conditions, on larger holes, or where the damage is close to the tyre shoulder or sidewall. Do not use either option blindly

Neither option should be forgotten once you are moving again. A sealed tyre needs prompt inspection, even if it seems to be holding pressure.
